A Layered Semantics for Utterance Modifiers *
نویسنده
چکیده
Bach (1999) classifies these adverbials as utterance modifiers, a term that gets right to the heart of their contribution. One also finds ‘second-order speech act’ (Bach 1999), ‘pragmatic adverb’ (Bellert 1977), and ‘illocutionary adverbial’ (Bach and Harnish 1979). The labels all recognize, in various ways, that these linguistic items permit speakers to qualify, restrict, and modify their relationships to the sentences they utter. This paper takes up the task of making good on the intuitions reflected in such labels while at the same time keeping these expressions in the grammar. They might be metalinguistic, but this does not mean that we can allow their descriptions to stand as metagrammatical. Useful tools and techniques for meeting this requirement are found in recent work on layered logics and layered structures (Gabbay 1999; Blackburn et al. 1993; Blackburn and Meyer-Viol 1997). In the layered setting defined below, we can talk about discourses and the objects they contain; we can also move down a level, to talk about the meanings of individual sentences. The semantics for utterance modifiers is located mainly in the upper layer of the logic and model theory. It should be said that the layering idea is not really new in linguistic semantics. Montagovian intensional models contain a lower layer of first-order structures and an upper layer of worlds (atomic

The Syntax And Semantics Of User-Defined Modifiers In Transportable Natural Language Processor
The Layered Domain Class system (LDC) is an experimental natural language processor being developed at Duke University which reached the prototype stage in May of 1983. Its primary goals are (I) to provide English-language retrieval capabilities for structured but unnormaUzed data files created by the user, (2) to allow very complex semantics, in terms of the information directly available from...
متن کاملThe semantics of scalar modifiers
On the naive account of scalar modifiers like ‘more than’ and ‘at most’, ‘At least three girls snored’ is synonymous with ‘More than two girls snored’, and both sentences mean that the number of snoring girls exceeded two (the same, mutatis mutandis for sentences with ‘at most’ and ‘less/fewer than’). We show that this is false and propose an alternative theory, according to which superlative m...

متن کاملFrom Standard to Non-Standard Semantics by Semantics Modifiers
An approach for systematically modifying the semantics of programming languages by semantics modifiers is described. Semantics modifiers are a class of programs that allow the development of general and reusable “semantics components”. Language independence is achieved through the interpretive approach: an interpreter serves as a mediator between the new language and the language for which the ...
متن کاملTowards a Type-Theoretical Account of Lexical Semantics
After a quick overview of the field of study known as “Lexical Semantics”, where we advocate the need of accessing additional information besides syntax and Montaguestyle semantics at the lexical level in order to complete the full analysis of an utterance, we summarize the current formulations of a well-known theory of that field. We then propose and justify our own model of the Generative Lex...
